Government-owned
nuclear weapons facilities operated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) constitute one
of the major decontamination, decommissioning and safety challenges in the world today.
Site maintenance, operations, and health physics professionals currently contracted to the DOE are faced
with aging, poorly-maintained and obsolete facilities dating back to World War II;
deteriorating plant operating systems and equipment; and outdated radioactive material
storage facilities which collectively pose a potentially very serious health, safety and
environmental hazard to plant personnel and the public at large. |
